Barack Obama and Bulldozer Democracy

22 September 2008

This past March marked the fifth anniversary of the Richard Daley Chicago Thug Machine’s unlawfully seizing and destroying Meigs Airfield.

Per Wikipedia:

“Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport (IATA: CGX, ICAO: KCGX), was a single strip airport built on Northerly Island, the man-made peninsula that also sited the 1933-1934 Century of Progress in Chicago, Illinois. The airport opened on December 10, 1948, and became the country's busiest single-strip airport by 1955. The latest air traffic tower was built in 1952 and the terminal was dedicated in 1961. The airfield was named for Merrill C. Meigs, publisher of the Chicago Herald and Examiner and an aviation booster…”

In 1994, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced plans, approved by the Chicago Planning Commission, to close the airport and build a park in its place, dedicated to himself and his cronies. In 1996, the city refused to renew the airport’s lease. The city briefly closed the airport until the state legislature made him reopen it. The airport had long been the recipient of millions of dollars in FAA funds (i.e. your tax dollars), which then require the airport remain open to serve the community and the national airspace system. In 2001 a deal was struck between Daley, the State of Illinois, and others to keep the airport open until 2026. However, when the federal legislation component of the deal did not pass the United States Senate, in an illegal move on March 30, 2003, Mayor Daley ordered private crews to destroy the runway in the middle of the night, bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface after first blinding security cameras installed after 9-11 with specially placed search lights. The required notice was not given to the Federal Aviation Administration or the owners of airplanes tied down at the field, and as a result tenant aircraft were left stranded at an airport with no way to depart as incoming flights had to suddenly divert to their alternates, placing in jeopardy the flying public. Daley’s excuse that this had been done for “national security” was indicative of his tyrannical and criminal style of “leadership.” The destruction of Meigs immediately placed Chicago in greater danger from aerial terrorism by removing the requirement that all aircraft approaching Chicago be in radio communications with an operating control tower. Daley, the inheritor of the most corrupt and violent big city administration in late 20th century America, and being a typical big city Democrat thug interested only in his administration, didn’t care and many local newspapers covered-up for him. (Interesting aside: William C. Ayers, currently a professor of education at the University of Chicago, is a former aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley and served with Obama on the board of the Woods Fund of Chicago.)

Law suits ensued, but with the bottomless pockets of Chicago’s political machine, Daley wore-down the plaintiffs and in the end Chicago paid a laughably small $33,000 fine for closing an airport with a charted instrument approach without giving the required 30-day notice. This was the maximum fine the law allowed at the time. On September 17, 2006, the city dropped all legal appeals and agreed to pay the $33,000 fine as well as repay $1 million in misappropriated FAA Airport Improvement Program funds that it used to destroy the airfield and build the new park.

Daley is perhaps Barack Obama’s biggest and most important political patron as Jeremiah Wright is his most important religious leader and Rezko his biggest early financial backer. Obama got his start in politics as part of Daley’s political machine. Obama was an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004, while the Meigs saga was playing out. As a Daley acolyte, Obama never said a word about Daley’s execrable trampling of the rights of Meigs Field, its businesses and users, and its supporters. To Daley/Obama, the only important thing is getting what they want. Oh, one more thing. Obama’s wife, Michelle, was a member of the Chicago Planning Commission while the destruction of Meigs was being planned in secret. She, like Obama, refuses to talk about this criminal enterprise. If Obama is elected president, it seems a safe bet that the country can expect Bulldozer Politics to quickly spread nationwide.
