The US Navy installed its first AN/WLD-1(V)1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS) in September aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Momsen (DDG-92), the most recently commissioned Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer. This gives the Momsen a new mine-sweeping capability in addition to the Burke class’ primary duty of anti-air warfare as part of the Aegis missile-defense system.
The RMS is a 23-ft. long, 12,900-lb. unmanned vehicle designed for hunting mines in conjunction with a ship’s sonar and combat-control system.
